Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 6 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 6 whole sandwich buns, toasted

Method
 

  1. Caramelize onions in butter and olive oil over medium-low heat for 25 to 30 minutes.
  2. Add garlic, then brown ground beef in the same skillet.
  3. Drain excess grease and stir onions back into the beef.
  4. Add broth, ketchup, Worcestershire, mustard, and seasoning, then simmer until thickened.
  5. Top toasted buns with the beef mixture and cheese, then melt cheese before serving.
